OC Is Poppin’

Ocean City Boardwalk is Poppin’ with flavor.

MD OC Is Poppin

There are two well-known Caramel Popcorn shops down to boardwalk in Ocean City Maryland and there apparently seems to be an unspoken battle of whose popcorn is best. Contenders…

Dolle’s vs. Fisher’s

My first trip back home with Chef Husband was after our first year of being married. It was for Christmas and we did head down to the boardwalk. Of course being off-season there were many stores & restaurants that were closed. I had heard the family members voice their popcorn preference. It just so happened that on that trip Fisher’s popcorn was open. Of course we grabbed a tub and headed home with the goods. It didn’t take long for it to vanish.

Well upon this recent trip to Ocean City with our little girls, since we were there just after the close of the season (weekend follow Labor Day) we again found Fisher’s tried and true running strong. It’s contender Dolle’s, was not open. Well at least not our few trips down the boardwalk. However Thursday hit, and with the start of Ocean City’s Bike Fest in play Dolle’s was open.

I was very excited that now, a few years later, I was going to be able to taste test them both for myself… a side by side comparison.

It doesn’t take much to tell what the difference was between the ‘Corn Contenders…

Dolle’s: darker in color, with a heavier caramel syrup and crunchy.

Fisher’s: lighter in color, with a lighter caramel syrup and chewy.

As to the backgrounds for the Corny Kernels:

Dolle’s has been around since 1910. With 3 locations in Ocean City, they are not just making caramel popcorn either, they are known for the candy making as well. It’s Dolle’s Candyland. Offering Salt Water Taffy, Caramels, Fudge and Gummies…to name a few. They accept special favors and orders to help complete your special occasion from weddings to corporate events. Dolle’s popcorn is offered in the flavors of Buttery, Caramel popcorn, Caramel Popcorn with Peanuts, or Cinnamon Pecan Caramel Popcorn and are sold in tubs or decorative tins. They do have shipping options and currently includes Free Shipping to  Military Addresses.

Fisher’s Popcorn has been in business since 1927. They do not offer any extra specialties sweets besides their popcorn. However they do offer a more unique experience to popcorn. If you know Maryland and what they are known for, Crab Cakes, then you would be familiar with the fact that Old Bay Seasoning is the season of choice. Not only in Crab Cakes but in ordering Crabs and Bushels of Crabs, when in season. So what easily seems to follow was Old Bay Seasoning Popcorn. If that is a little much to stomach you can most definitely try their famous caramel popcorn, with or with out peanuts. If you want more choices they also offer Butter Flavored Popcorn, White Cheddar Popcorn, Cinnamon Caramel Popcorn and Caramel Chocolate Drizzle Popcorn (seasonal). Popcorn can ordered in a cup, plastic tub or decorative tin. They do offer party favor sizing… including popcorn balls. They also offer shipping options which includes shipping to Military Addresses as well.

So I put the caramel popcorn to the taste test. For myself, ok well actually me and Chef Husband, we have sided with Dolle’s. We appear to like the more crunchy popcorn with the heavier darker caramel flavor. But I believe we have a tendency to lean toward foods that have more color…food appears to be more appetizing with color. I think it’s a “Chef” thing.

Side by side they both make a great caramel popcorn. It might come down to a crunchy v chewy for you. But regardless of what I say, take the challenge for yourself. You might have a split decision.
